Agile at Sberbank: how to understand what's going on?

In December 2020, we held Sbergile Talks (yes, it was a long time ago), our first online conference about Agile at Sberbank. Three streams, 31 reports, speakers from the largest domestic and foreign companies that are in one way or another related to Agile. About 10 thousand people listened to us. I want to go over the highlights and tell you what was there.



It has long been an open secret that Sberbank has carried out one of the largest Agile transformations in the world. Top managers in various media have repeatedly told about this. So, what has happened in Sberbank over these four years? We have drastically accelerated. And speed is one of the key development factors for Sberbank. And it is vital for tech companies to successfully achieve their goals. Especially for large companies like ours. And yes, Agile really accelerates product development and empowers the company to be more flexible overall. Therefore, many in one way or another try to introduce similar practices in themselves, but not all succeed. Every year we and other market players openly talk about possible mistakes, accumulated experience and practical examples of changes.



So why is Agile so interesting to the Russian market?

Even five to seven years ago in Russia, mainly IT companies followed the values ​​voiced in the Agile Manifesto. No one was in a hurry to rebuild the mindset, especially in large organizations like ours.



At that time, decisions at Sberbank were made slowly, and the IT architecture was monolithic. This is completely normal for companies of this size. And this is not the Russian approach or any peculiarities of the mentality: give or take, this is how major players look in most sectors of the economy around the world. At the same time, Sberbank was a commercially successful bank.



But to become a successful IT player and compete not only with banks, but also with international tech giants, it was necessary to accelerate. Finding tools and approaches that would help achieve such an ambitious goal led us to Agile.



In our opinion, Agile is a working practice that can trigger the process of change in a company. And in business, those companies are successful that are ready to change and adapt to market demands.
