Proxmox updated to version 7.0 - still not banana, but with Btrfs

A new major version of Proxmox Virtual Environment has been released, namely version 7.0. This open source distribution, which is a very good virtualization platform built on the basis of Debian, KVM, LXC, Ceph, has long been on the market as a counterweight to others, incl. and commercial (even if they are free in some of their versions) hypervisors, and for a year now it has been working on many hosts in the world.

The Proxmox virtualization platform is equipped with all the necessary management tools and an easy-to-use web user interface. This allows simple and easy management of the host both through the command line and through a standard web browser. As an open source project, Proxmox VE has a huge user base with over 450,000 hosts worldwide.

So what's new with us?

  • The release is based on Debian 11 "Bullseye", but using the newer Linux 5.11 kernel. LXC 4.0, QEMU 6.0, OpenZFS 2.0.4 are used.

  • The new version of Ceph by default is Ceph Pacific 16.2; Ceph Octopus 15.2 is still supported and can be used.

  • Btrfs file system with subvolume snapshot capability, built-in RAID, and self-healing data and metadata checksums.

  • New "Repositories" panel for easy GUI management of package repositories.

  • Single sign-on (SSO) support with OpenID Connect.

  • QEMU 6.0 with 'io_uring', with the ability to remove VM disks that are no longer referenced.

  • LXC 4.0 has full support for cgroups v2.

  • Redesigned Proxmox installer.

  • Standalone ACME plugin with improved support for dual-stack environments (IPv4 and IPv6).

  • Using ifupdown2 as the default for new installations.

  • Setting chrony as the default NTP daemon.

and, as they say, "many other improvements, bug fixes, etc."

Upgrading a Ceph Cluster : First you need to upgrade Proxmox VE from 6.4 to 7.0. After that, you need to upgrade Ceph from Octopus to Pacific. A detailed upgrade guide can be found on the related documentation page .
