NASA's Artemis program faces many challenges to overcome in order to reach its goal of landing humans on the moon in 2024. There are many technical challenges that have already arisen and are likely to arise in the coming years, when NASA completes the development of the Space Launch System, Orion, one or more manned lander, and the lunar Gateway. Funding remains an issue, as evidenced by a House bill that requires NASA to receive less than one-fifth of the amount requested for the Human Landing System (HLS) program (see NASA's Irregular Funding and Budget, The Space Review, July 27, p. 2020 ). It is possible that a change in administration next year will slow down or even abandon the entire program.

Jake Bleacher, Principal Investigator in NASA's Advanced Research Systems Division, noted at another meeting that the agency had just begun the process of determining landing sites. He added, however, that while NASA envisions eventually setting up an “Artemis base camp” at one location, presumably the South Pole, it was not required that Artemis 4, the second manned landing, travel to the same location as Artemis 3. He added that there was also “no clarity” as to how long after Artemis 3 would land Artemis 4. “In a world of amazing understatements ... this is one of them.
