Western Digital begins shipping enterprise HDDs up to 20 TB

Western Digital has announced the release of several models of capacious HDDs for corporate use . The Gold and Ultrastar lines were updated. In the first case, the discs can already be bought, in the second case we are talking about the announcement of new models that will become available no earlier than the next quarter.

WD Gold is media for enterprise storage systems. An ordinary user can also purchase them, but they are positioned as server ones. The Gold line of hard drives only supports the SATA interface. The manufacturer gives them a five-year warranty.

The line has expanded with 16 TB and 18 TB models. The data transfer rate for 16 TB models is 262 MB / s, for 18 TB devices this figure is slightly higher - 269 MB / s. The cache buffer for both models is 512 MB. The manufacturer claims both models have 2.5 million hours of uptime.

The second news is the expansion of the line of Ultrastar DC hard drives with models with a capacity of 16 and 18 TB (HC550). Like previous HDDs, they are designed for corporate use. Their difference from their β€œrelatives” is that they support not one, but two interfaces, not only SATA, but also SAS 12G. The data transfer speed for models with a capacity of 16 and 18 TB is 250 MB / s and 257 MB / s, respectively.

These HDDs use CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) technology, that is, data is stored in parallel tracks without overlapping. The latter is relevant for SMR technology (Shingled Magnetic Recording). Its advantage is the ability to increase the recording density, its disadvantage is a decrease in performance. The disks have nine platters each, the speed of which is 7200 RPM. The DRAM buffer size is 512 MB.

Other advantages of the discs include vibration protection, increased productivity, and increased reliability. Both models also come with a five-year warranty. The declared value is 630 euros. True, it will not be possible to buy a 20 TB HDD until next quarter.

Western Digital didn't stop at discs. The lines of hybrid shelves JBOD Ultrastar Data60 and Data102, plus Serv60 + 8, have also been replenished with new models.

The systems will ship with new HDDs starting next quarter. Platform specifications - 1.836PB, 4U. They are warranted for five years, just like hard drives.

ArcticFlow's new thermal zone cooling technology enables the discs to operate at lower temperatures than usual. Accordingly, the fans do not operate at full power, vibration and noise are less, and the reliability of operation is higher.
