How I moved from Belarus to Germany

I am Dima, a front-end developer and engineering manager, and in January 2021 my wife and I decided to move from Belarus.

Motivation

In fact, the decision has been ripening for a long time, I received the first offer to the Polish EPAM 4 years ago. This time, with the motivation “what else needs to happen in order for us to decide to try to live in another country,” it was decided to start acting.

Before moving, I worked at Godel Technologies in Minsk (a kind of outsourcing of a healthy person), and if they had an office in Germany, or if I had not received an offer to another country, I would have simply moved inside the company.

Due to the fact that the wife is an auditor / controlling specialist and it would be rather difficult for her to look for a job in Poland (where there is a Godel office) (language barrier), it was decided to narrow the search circle to:

  • England, since we know the language, and I, having worked at Godel, also the culture

  • Germany, since my wife knows the language, I was here for about 2 weeks before

  • Amsterdam and surroundings, because there is a well-developed technological sphere, and there is a feeling that a quarter of the Epamites are already there.

Receiving an offer

Many people recommend monitoring the markets of countries, conditionally for Belarus it is jobs.tut.by (when it still existed), hh.ru for Russia or Xing for Germany. For me, the easiest way was LinkedIn, where in January I posted “looking for a job in such and such locations” and started tracking ads. As a result, HR Wayfair (the company where I ended up moving) found me on its own through LinkedIn.

For prices - there is another reason why you can become a vegetarian - meat “a little worse than normal” costs 15+ euros a kilogram, there is no chilled fish where we live at all. A trip to the store - about 50 euros (for a meal for 3 days), plus 1 delivery of ready-made food approximately every day (10-15 euros).

About a bank account - you need to do it yourself, they will not open it without some documents, such as a registration certificate (that is, at least 4 weeks will pass from the moment of arrival), so I expect to receive my first salary at the end of August.

In general, the move went well, let's see what happens next.
