Different roots are needed, different roots are important

Instead of introducing

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who responded to the first article on optimizing code in C / C ++ using the example of a function for calculating the square root of an integer rounded to the nearest integer. Thanks to expert attention, a typo in the text has been corrected; the piggy bank of effective algorithms has been replenished.

An interesting algorithm is sqrxi32 from @ Sdima1357 - Example 1, hereinafter referred to as "_i32" for brevity. The "_i32" algorithm unconditionally fulfills the main task condition - "rounding to the nearest integer" - on the entire set of argument values [0 .. 0xFFFFFFFF], while showing high performance.

Example 1: Calculating the square root of an integer, rounded to the nearest integer.

uint16_t sqrxi32( uint32_t y )
{
	if ( y == 1 )
		return 1;

	uint32_t xh = y > 0x10000ul ? 0x10000ul : y;
	uint32_t xl = 0;
	uint32_t xc;

	for ( int k = 0; k < 16; k++ )
	{
		xc = ( xh + xl ) >> 1ul;
		if ( xc * xc - xc >= y )
		{
			xh = xc;
		}
		else
		{
			xl = xc;
		}
	}
	return ( xh + xl ) >> 1ul;
}

Another good quality of the "_i32" algorithm is its time predictability. The running time "_i32" is constant, in contrast to the "_evn" algorithm, which consumes machine time in proportion to the modulus of the argument.

What is this text about

Observe the complex effect of build settings and target hardware platform on the final performance, when applied to the same source code.

The source code contains a solution to one problem with different algorithms.

Test assembly for other platforms is carried out by analogy.

Hardware platforms other than the ones mentioned above (Table 3) will probably require a cosmetic modification of the "sqrt_cmp.h" file.
