Cooler Master SK62 mechanical keyboard review: improved ergonomics and short key travel

The new Cooler Master keyboard outperforms many of its counterparts, including its own predecessor, the SK61. The keyboard is compact and well assembled. It can work both via Bluetooth and with a wired connection using a USB cable.

Due to its compactness, this keyboard can be easily taken with you on the road, unless, of course, the laptop keyboard is something that does not suit you. Read more about the keyboard under the cut.

Appearance

The keyboard case is identical to that of the previous model SK621. The keyboard is compact, as mentioned above, the keyboard is assembled well. As for the color - there is not only gray, but also "silver white".

The base of the keyboard is a metal plate, which adds strength and looks good. In addition, metal is also good because it reflects the keyboard backlight.

The developers also improved the keys, plus there were foldable legs that allow you to raise the back of the keyboard at an angle that is convenient for the user. Now the keys are different from ordinary laptop keys - they were exactly the same as in the previous model, which gave the impression of working with laptop keys, and we buy a mechanical keyboard not for this at all, right?

The body is devoid of extraneous design elements or functional elements. This makes the keyboard look minimalistic. Left - wired / wireless switch, center back - USB-C port. There is also a nice carrying case for the keyboard in the box.

What about typing?

The shape of the keys is traditional for mechanics. And this despite the fact that the switches on this keyboard are low-profile. It all feels close to Cherry MX Red. It is worth noting that the keys themselves are made of ABS plastic, so after a year of active work they will shine and become more slippery.

I didn't have to get used to the keyboard - I was able to quickly type text right away. The build quality provides a comfortable feel during use, even though the keyboard is not very heavy.

The only problem is the right Shift key. It is small in size and somewhat oddly located. If you are used to working with the right Shift, it will take a little getting used to. If you do not use this key, there is no problem at all.

An important point - the keyboard is not full-sized. Its dimensions are 60% of a conventional keyboard. But this does not affect work - the creators of the gadget made it so that the smaller than usual size is almost not felt.

Part of the compactness problem is solved by the absence of several secondary keys - their functions have been transferred to the remaining ones. For the convenience of the user, the manufacturer has indicated all the functions of all keys by putting icons on the keys.

In terms of gaming, I tried the keyboard with games like Doom Eternal and Borderlands 3, as well as Becastled and Ancestors Legacy. There were no problems. By the way, thanks to the small size of the keyboard, it easily fit on my small desk.

Probably, professional gamers will prefer connecting the keyboard with a cable. Switching takes very little time. The battery capacity of the device is 4000 mAh, so the autonomy of the keyboard is many days. The manufacturer claims 240 hours of battery life (with the backlight off). I tested it both in Bluetooth mode and when connected with a cable. I can say that with the backlight on, you will have to charge the keyboard approximately every two days of intensive use.

Cooler Master SK622 Software

Most low-cost mechanical keyboards do not have their own software. But that keyboard has software, it's MasterPlus +. It can be used to customize highlighting and create complex macros.

In general, the software does not need to be installed, all functions can be controlled using special key combinations. But macros without this software will be more difficult to configure, so if you need them, it's better to install the software. The software runs smoothly and is completely reliable.

What's the bottom line?

The keyboard is comfortable, durable and compact. The design is minimal, the software is simple and reliable. Overall, this keyboard outperforms some of the more well-known manufacturers. The price, however, is rather big - about $ 117. But this applies to the version with red buttons. There is a discount on the model with blue buttons, which costs $ 100 already, which is already quite reasonable.

If you need a mechanical keyboard for gaming that can withstand frequent travel, the SK622 is almost perfect.
