Resilience Lessons, or Choosing IT Racks Correctly

For 7 years now I have been engaged in the art of capacity-management at DataLine - I manage the main resources of the data center. Simply put, I provide each client with the necessary and sufficient space, electricity and cold to solve his problems. We have already described how we keep statistics on equipment consumption and determine the standard power. But what about the racks themselves, which are responsible for the space?

Today I will conduct a small educational program on the server racks, show what and how we choose for the reliable operation of the equipment. The list of recommendations for choosing cabinets will be in the last section, experienced data centers can immediately switch to it and offer their additions :)

This article is the result of our broadcast with @kshadskiy and @rbekrenev on Telegram. At the same time, you can listen to the broadcast recording in the Lettuce Cart .

What are standard racks

Our data centers have about 12 thousand installed racks. According to statistics, 90% of the racks look like this: width 600 mm, depth 1070 or 1100 mm. Let's take a closer look at such a rack and see where the standard comes from.

Width and depth are obvious characteristics that allow for the placement of racks on a 2D machine room plan. Everything is almost the same as with the layout of the apartment: we take the dimensions and estimate the arrangement according to the data center feng shui.
