In March, we already published a post on Synology branded hard drives and SSDs , in which we looked at the benefits of this step for the company's customers. Now is the time to test one of the Synology HAT5300 series hard drives, which are specially designed for use in Synology NAS and servers. We will run tests on the Synology RackStation RS820RP +, as well as the traditional method in conjunction with the Hardwareluxx lab .
With the HAT5300 series, Synology has introduced its first NAS hard drives. In 2020, Synology SSDs were announced in various formats for storage pools (2.5 ") and caching (M.2 2280 and 22110), followed by 8, 12 and 16 TB HAT5300 hard drives. enterprise-class with 2.5 million hours between failures (MTBF) and 550 TB of annual load.
Synology has chosen the Toshiba MG0xA platform as the basis for the development of its drives. But Synology created the firmware on its own, which gave the company the right to offer drives under its own brand. Mechanically, the 8TB hard drive is identical to the MG06ACA800E, while the 12TB variant is the MG07ACA12TE. Synology does not provide information on the 16TB version of the HAT5300, but it will most likely use the Toshiba MG08A 16TB HDD platform.
Synology is driving its decision to enter the hard drive market not only to provide customers with all the hardware and software from a single source, but also to supply fully compatible and certified HDDs . Here Synology is no longer dependent on third-party suppliers, for example, to replace defective components. And it can validate hard drives for its NAS and servers to the fullest.
In addition, Synology claims higher storage performance when paired with its systems. We didn't have a Synology Enterprise NAS SA3600 with 12x HAT5300 hard drives at hand, so we'll draw conclusions based on the NAS available in the lab.
