Today, assessments of the significance of the Chernobyl accident differ. Someone considers it one of the reasons for the collapse of the USSR. Indeed, the elimination of the accident cost the economy of the Soviet Union $ 300 billion, according to fairly conservative estimates. A lot of money was also invested after the accident. More than a million people were injured, both those involved in the liquidation and evacuated, and those who continue to live in the affected territories. The harm to public health is difficult to assess today. And the work to eliminate the accident will not be completed soon, it is not for nothing that Shelter-2 is designed for a hundred years.
The scientific director of the RBMK project, Anatoly Aleksandrov, after being removed from the post of president of the USSR Academy of Sciences in October 1986, retained the title of academician and headed the IAE for more than two years. In 1989, his place was taken by Evgeny Velikhov. Until the end of his life, Aleksandrov adhered to the version that the personnel were responsible for the accident, which he repeatedly spoke about in interviews and in books.
