How computers opened their eyes

In 1998, a graduate of the NNSU named after I. Lobachevsky Vadim Pisarevsky got a job in a small IT company and was given the task to start working on a technology that he knew nothing about. At that time, he did not expect that this work would drag on for decades, and on the basis of the developments created with his participation, several billion gadgets would be manufactured in the world, and the life of people on planet Earth would change significantly.

How a small company got started on a planetary scale

It all started with the fact that mathematicians and IT specialists - natives of Sarov created the Nizhny Novgorod Software Technology Lab (NSTL - Nizhny Software Technology Lab [1] ). Previously, they worked on the execution of a contract between Intel and Sarov VNIIEF. But cooperation with international companies in the closed nuclear city, with its secrecy regime, was very inconvenient. Therefore, several Sarov specialists moved to the regional center, while maintaining ties with Intel. “We were doing several contracts with Intel when I was offered to take on the work on the library [2] computer vision, - recalls Valery Fedorovich Kuryakin (in those years one of the leaders of NSTL). - I already had experience with computer vision, and I understood the promise of this technology. And although then I was forced to be torn between promising and less promising, but money-making projects (the company lacked strength), I decided to agree. "

The NSTL really lacked strength. At that time, it employed less than 40 people, mostly young professionals. And not all employees were eager to work on something unknown. Having tried several programmers unsuccessfully, the head of the NSTL gave the task to start working on the library two yesterday's graduates of the N.N. Lobachevsky: Vadim Pisarevsky (today - an employee of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (Shenzhen, China) and Viktor Erukhimov (now - CEO & Founder at itSeez3D) They did not know anything about computer vision, but they got down to work with enthusiasm. “I didn't have the feeling of something big, but I had interesting tasks and some kind of endless drive, when everyone was running around with their eyes wide open,” recalls Viktor Erukhimov. In those years, Nizhny Novgorod developers worked in pairs with Intel specialists in the United States, and the entire project was supervised by its initiators at Intel - Gary Bradsky and Shinn Lee. Later, when the citizens of Nizhny Novgorod showed good results, they were given greater autonomy.

The world community does not yet see a ceiling for the development of computer vision technology. And artificial intelligence technologies barely got off the floor. Therefore, the OpenCV library will grow for a long time, and no one can predict how these technologies will change the life of mankind.
