NFT cats: digital revolution or hype pyramid?

A collage of pictures by the artist beeple holds the record for the cost of all sold digital NFT-works today.

NFT is one of the hottest topics in the blockchain world. Someone has already earned millions of dollars on them, someone has lost hundreds and thousands. Some people call NFT a revolutionary invention that will change the way game development and the way we perceive digital (intangible) objects. Others are perplexed as to how such a divorce can be fought and money can be paid to scammers. But regardless of who is right, the fact remains: NFT is now rumored, and their turnover has already reached very impressive amounts.

Here is one of our friendson the laptop there is a cool GIF with a dancing cat, to which the NFT is screwed. The thing is piece, unique, in a couple of years it will be possible to help out a lot for it. True, it will be difficult to get the gif out of the laptop. Details under the cut.

What is NFT?

NFT stands for non-fungible token, that is, a non-fungible token. The idea is that there are interchangeable objects that are completely identical to each other - for example, one ruble is equal to another ruble - and there are non-fungible objects, each of which is unique and unrepeatable. Let's say when you come to the store and buy new sneakers, they are interchangeable at that moment: completely identical to any sneaker of the same size. And when you wear them, then this pair will become unique due to irreproducible abrasions and other changes, that is, the sneakers will become unique - there are no others the same in the whole world, there are only similar ones .

All trade in objects of material art is based on the principle of uniqueness. For example, even if an artist draws an exact copy of a painting, even if it is his own, it will still be two different paintings, albeit very similar. And electronic objects are usually interchangeable - Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, and now you already have a perfect copy of some gif or song, try to find two differences.

As a result, they came up with NFT - a blockchain that can be attached to any intangible object - a picture, video, music file, object in the game - and thus declare that this object is unique and belongs only to you. You can copy such an object, but you won't be able to pass it off as your own - your NFT won't allow it. A kind of certificate of uniqueness. You can fasten a token not only to a digital, but also to a material object. For this, we need to thank Etherium smart contracts, it is this crypt that underlies most NFTs.

Today, tens of millions of dollars are already being paid for digital art with NFT. So far, the record is held by artist Mike Winkelmann, acting under the pseudonym Beeple - his collage of 5 thousand images was sold at Christie's auction as much as $ 69 million. For a digital image with a token:

Another famous example is the sale of an NFT meme with a flying cat:

This meme sold for $ 580,000. Don't ask why. We ourselves are perplexed.

Here's another thing: the Injective Protocol company fueled the NFT hype by buying a painting from Banksy for $ 95 thousand, publicly burning it and tied it to a digital copy of the NFT. This pixel set is now owned by a company that claims it is a true piece of crypto art.

That is, NFT has managed to become an important factor in the trade of works of art of varying degrees of value (or doubtfulness). There are various electronic platforms where everyone can buy and sell NFTs. And their prices vary greatly. However, there is an important point: the digital object itself is not stored in the NFT, but only its description and certificate of ownership. This already leads to funny situations when someone bought a token, and for quite a significant amount, and ... the object itself suddenly disappeared

So if you decide to go to crypto collectors, then think carefully about the appropriateness. And at the same time, check which tokens you are paying for.

NFTs have become very popular in the gaming world. Tokens are attached to various game objects - weapons, armor and other goodness - and sold as unique objects that have a specific owner within a specific game. The owner is not the copyright, but the game item. Some NFT fans dream of a bright day when tokens will become universal and items from other games can be used in games. I bought myself a machine gun in some shooter, and then lit it with it in a fantasy RPG.

Today, many predict a bright future for NFT as a copyright guarantor in the context of the massive copying of images, videos, books and music and other works. But technology is just as actively criticized as another tool for extorting money from simpletons. Time will tell who is right.

A sample of degenerate crypto art, for which someone paid a couple dozen bucks.

In the meantime, you can get acool NFT GIF for free, which may soon be irrevocably destroyed in a completely barbaric way. Moreover, it was destroyed along with a good expensive laptop and an excellent piano. All details are here.

▍UPD. May 24 15.55:

Our friend writes:

I reached the coworking space, tried to get access, and I couldn't either ...

I already wanted to call my ex, but ... The trouble does not come alone ((

During the time that the laptop was in the hands of my ex, they managed to hack it. This was done by a group of hackers called β€œsp0rk b4gel” . Their target was the AI source codes from my laptop (remember, I told you that I work for a very serious corporation), and they successfully kidnapped them ...

They didn't need my crypto cat, they didn't even notice it, because they came for others. And now they are demanding a ransom for not publishing these codes, and of course I really do not want to publish them, because this is the property of the company, and it may even start legal prosecution for the leak.

Of course, they changed the SSH key for accessing the laptop (that's why you and I couldn't connect to it), so that I couldn't fix anything on my own.

I received this letter from them:

"Hello. It seems that today is not your day, because your data has become ours. On behalf of sp0rk b4gel, I sincerely congratulate you on this. If you do not want extremely unpleasant consequences, transfer 0.2 bitcoin to 12d1jWjmreNVfE5SKVrhm5T2r6D6bXdS4H, and you will find the way yourself, you’re a programmer. And yes, if you are interested in how we hacked you, then we are hinting - in vain you took part in that leaky project for the Sokol studio ... "
What should I do?
