Technical illustrations of the past

Hello, Habr! You won't surprise anyone with high-quality photos of high resolution. We are used to seeing them on the Internet and in print media. For example, here is Mont Blanc , where you can see almost every snowflake. Of particular interest are the scientific illustrations produced by microscopes and telescopes with a high degree of detail. And how was it done a couple of centuries ago, when photography was underdeveloped and it was a little more difficult to create illustrations?

And then engravings were in use. Only by the middle of the 19th century, the first photographs of astronomical objects appeared, which began to be used for scientific purposes. But the tradition of drawing from nature for a long time competed with photography, since it allowed to highlight the essential features of an object, to show it more clearly than photography could do.
