It's time for you to defend Sci-hub

Rescue mission for Sci-Hub and Open Science

Elsevier and USDOJ have declared war on Sci-Hub and Open Science. The era of Sci-Hub and Alexandra fighting alone must end. We must take her side.

On May 7, Sci-Hub's Alexandra Elbakyan reported that the FBI had been listening to her accounts for more than two years. The news comes after Twitter silenced the official Sci_Hub Twitter account because Indian scientists and Elsevier have organized themselves against it.

Sci-Hub itself is currently frozen and hasn't uploaded any new articles since December 2020. This rescue mission focuses on maintaining seeding of a collection of articles to prepare for the potential Sci-Hub shutdown.

Alexandra Elbakyanof Sci-Hub, Library Genesis book warrior , Aaron Schwartz, and countless others unnamed have fought to free science from the grip of commercial publishers. Today they do it secretly, alone, unbeknownst to them for fear of imprisonment, and even now they are being tapped by the FBI. They sacrifice everything for one vision: Open Science.

Why are they doing this? They do this so that humble scientists on the other side of the planet can practice medicine, create science, fight for democracy, teach and learn. People like Alexandra Elbakyan would sacrifice their personal freedom for the sole purpose of liberating knowledge. But Elsevier Corp (RELX, market cap: 50 billion) wants to silence her, wants to see her in jail, and wants to shut down Sci-Hub.

It's time to send Elsevier and USDOJ a clearer message about the fate of Sci-Hub and Open Science: we are the library, we won't be silenced, we won't shut down our computers, and we are many.

If you have followed this story, then you know that this is not our first rescue operation.

purpose

Several Library Genesis seeders are currently distributing Sci-Hub torrents. There are 850 scihub torrents , each containing 100,000 scientific articles, for a total of 85 million scientific articles: 77 TB. This is the complete Sci-Hub database. We need to protect this.

Rescue team

First wave: we need 85 datahoarders to store and distribute 1 TB of articles each, 10 torrents in total. Download 10 random torrents from the scimag collection , then download the torrents to your client and store as much as you can. Articles are DOI-encoded and in zip files.

Second wave: reach out to 10 good friends and ask them to download only 1 random torrent (100 GB). These are 850 seeds. We are now a library.

Final wave: development for open source Sci-Hub. freereadorg / awesome-libgenIs an open source collection of achievements based on Sci-Hub and Library Genesis databases. The ultimate goal here is to decentralize the open source Sci-Hub, and it starts with data, but it will take years of developer hard work to bring these libraries into the future.

Thanks to the communities / r / datahoarder and / r / seedboxes , seedbox.io, and NFOrce for your support of previous missions and your love of science.
