Chernobyl part 4. Accident

Part 3

Author: Alexander Starostin

At one hour twenty-three minutes forty-seven seconds, the reactor collapsed as a result of a thermal explosion caused by the acceleration of power on prompt neutrons. This is a collapse, the ultimate catastrophe that can happen at a power reactor. They did not comprehend it, they did not prepare for it, no technical measures for localization at the block and station are provided. There are no organizational measures either.

Confusion, bewilderment and complete misunderstanding of what and how it happened did not possess us for long. Absolutely urgent matters piled up, the implementation of which drove all other thoughts out of my head.

Looking back, I don’t know how to say - long ago (more than five years have passed) or recent: everything is still in front of our eyes - with good reason I can state that then we did everything possible in that extreme situation. There was nothing more useful to be done. I did not observe any panic, any psychosis. Not a single person left the bloc without permission, they left only by order. We all came out of this test with serious health injuries, for many - fatal.

Anatoly Dyatlov, former deputy chief engineer for the operation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Apparently, this is Uskov. The photo was taken at the control room-3 - the control point of the reactor of the 3rd unit this year. If I understand correctly, then behind Uskov selsyns are instruments showing the depth of immersion of the control rods.

Z. s. Unfortunately, we were able to find photos of far from all the people mentioned in this article. Most likely, it will be the same in the future. It seems that not all of them are even mentioned in the  Book of Memory of the Participants of the Liquidation and Victims of the Accident  on the Chernobyl site (such as Uskov) Many photos of employees were taken from the same place, and if they are somewhere on the Internet, then I could not find them. A big request - if you can find it - discard the links in the comments. The same goes for inaccuracies and errors.
