I will say right away that I am not trying to criticize here, or cast a shadow on, without exaggeration, the genius of Elon Musk. I myself am a big fan of his projects and ideas. Except, in fact, the colonization of Mars. No, not because it is economically unfeasible, or technically unfeasible. Also, I do not mind flying to other planets at all, and maybe even colonizing them. Only in the sense voiced by Elon himself, in my opinion, this is the wrong goal. In this article I will try to convince you that this is so, and the multimillion-year (we hope) future of human civilization is unlikely to be associated with the direct settlement of this planet, or any others.
To begin with, consider the argumentation of Elon himself as to why this is worth doing.
First, this is the transformation of humanity into a multiplanetary civilization, in order to avoid instant death from any global catastrophes. Perhaps this is the main reason that Elon voices in his interviews. In essence, you can't argue with her, but my argument lies in the area that the population of Mars is not the best way to solve this problem.
Secondly, it is a technological challenge that should mobilize intellectual and other resources for new breakthroughs in all areas of knowledge. Here, too, I agree with the thesis that this is important and necessary, but there are no less ambitious technological tasks, which are more effective in terms of the ultimate goal.
Thirdly, it's just cool! Yes, and only in this case I will not have a stronger argument and solution. The first colonization of another planet for humanity is something akin to the rite of initiation of our civilization in Space.
Perhaps, in some interviews, Elon called something else, as the reason and meaning of colonization, but I think I pointed out the main thing.
So let's start with the first argument. In fact, later on it will become clear that it is enough to deal with the rest.
Humanity was born and reached the current level of its development (not very high, in the context of the colonization of other planets) exclusively on planet Earth. The earth is our home, or, in the words of K.E. Tsiolkovsky, the cradle of reason, and he added for sure - you can't live in the cradle forever. You can't argue with that. So, where to live?
