FOSS News β„–68 - digest of materials about free and open source software for April 26 - May 2, 2021

Hello everyone!

We continue to digest news and other materials about free and open source software and a little about hardware. The most important thing about penguins and not only, in Russia and the world.

Main topics of the new release:

  1. Continuing the story of the University of Minnesota, whose researchers sent malicious code to Linux - the scientists explained themselves and asked for forgiveness, and the developers demanded that a number of other requirements be fulfilled in order to restore trust in the University.
  2. Is there life after CentOS? Analysis of alternatives.
  3. Is it possible to be a little pregnant, or the Russian curse of Open Source.

I think everyone is aware of the difficult situation in which the FSF (Free Software Foundation) found itself due to the conflict around its founder, Richard Stallman. Details can be found in our news selections [β†’ 1 , 2 ]. I think it is high time to support the Foundation with the introduction and finances [β†’] . The FSF is one of the few organizations that is uncompromisingly committed to protecting the interests of the majority of people who use computers for work, social activism, and private affairs. And for an organization to work fully in the interests of people, it must be funded by these people. By the way, 80% of FSF funding comes from individuals.
