Proxmox VE has been updated to 6.4: now with Single File Restore and Live Restore

Proxmox Virtual Environment (in common parlance - Promxox VE, PVE, or even just a "proxy") has been updated to version 6.4, and the list of changes once again pleases .

Version 6.4 includes interesting new features: Live Restore and Single File Restore , support for Ceph Octopus 15.2.11 and Ceph Nautilus 14.2.20, many improvements for KVM / QEMU, as well as notable bug fixes. The usability of Proxmox VE has been greatly improved by the addition of many features and management options to the web interface.

The new version is based on Debian Buster 10.9, but uses the more recent, LTS Linux 5.4 kernel. Optionally, you can install a 5.11 kernel to support the latest hardware, but on Proxmox VE 6.x series the default kernel will remain 5.4. PVE 6.4 includes the latest open-source virtualization technologies such as QEMU 5.2, LXC 4.0 and OpenZFS 2.0.4. In addition, the Proxmox developers support two versions of Ceph, a scalable distributed storage system in their virtualization platform: during the installation process, users can choose the desired version - Ceph Octopus 15.2.11 or Ceph Nautilus 14.2.20.

Single File Restore and Live Restore for KVM

PVE 6.4 offers users new Live Restore and Single File Restore features, allowing users to simplify recovery tasks and improve recovery time (RTO) performance.

  • Single File Restore : Quite often, users need to restore from a backup not the entire virtual machine or container, but only one file. Now this feature is available for archives of backup copies of virtual machines and containers stored on the Proxmox Backup Server (they wrote well about the lattercolleagues from Selectel). This means that you can choose to restore a single file or directory without having to download the entire archive. To restore a file through the Proxmox VE web interface, users can open the file browser directly via the File Restore button. The Download button allows the user to download files and directories, the latter being compressed on the fly into a zip archive. If the user wants to download a VM image that may contain data that is unsure of security, Proxmox VE will start a temporary VM to load data from it. This avoids danger to the hypervisor system itself.
