Development of domestic MLRS. Tsarist rockets

Author: Alexey Borzenkov The

wars of Russia in the Caucasus in the 19th century, unlike recent conflicts, are little known to the general public. The events of those years are overshadowed by the wars with Napoleon, Turkey, and the European coalition in Crimea. The best weapons, which were in service with the Russian army, went there too. It is unlikely that in the cold August 1827, the highlanders defending Ushagan were expecting something unusual. But they were hit by a volley of combat missiles designed by Zasyadko. This is the first use by Russia of military missiles from installations that became the ancestors of missile weapons, which, almost two centuries later, are an integral part of our army.

By themselves, rockets in the 19th century were not a curiosity. First invented in China, they were paper or bamboo pipes stuffed with gunpowder and were used for entertainment and storming cities. In this form, they came to us. The first mentions of the use of missiles in Russia date back to the 15th century. They were used to signal and fire at cavalry, which were frightened by flashes and explosions. A certain number of missiles were even supplied to the friendly forces of the Cossacks. In 1607, the "Charter of military, cannon and other matters related to military science" was written, which described the creation and use of missiles, and in 1680 the Rocket Institute was founded, which was engaged in the manufacture of powder compositions and the missiles themselves. Last but not least, this was promoted by the love of fireworks. Peter I studied at the Rocket School, who personally studied foreign samples. All this led to the creation in 1717 of a signal rocket of 44 mm caliber, which existed in service with the army for more than 170 years.
