How was the first Java Mentor alumni meetup in Rosbank after the lockdown?

On April 17, a meetup for Java Mentor alumni was held at the Rosbank office in the Oko-2 tower. This was the first event after a long break. We tell and show how it was.

The meetup was held as part of the career support for Java Mentor graduates - for the guys who got employed as Java developers in various Moscow companies after studying at JM. Such meetings are an opportunity to listen to experts from IT companies, as well as great networking within a strong Java community.

The meetup program was compiled based on the needs of graduates, based on the topics and technologies they need in their work.

Representatives of the Rosbank team were the first to speak. Alexey Yasakov and Alexander Morozov spoke about Rosbank and Societe Generale group, as well as digital projects of the Rosbank corporate business team.

Then Alexey Salaev (Java developer of Rosbank) made a presentation. He told how the RBS is built for legal entities using microservices and the concept of onion architecture. At the meetup, Alexey shared the theoretical foundations of this architect and showed its practical application. Also, based on real code, he showed the pros and cons of this approach.

Then there was a lecture from Svetlana Krivenko (Scrum-master of Raiffeisenbank). Svetlana introduced the audience to what TDD is and helped to understand how unit tests relate to architecture and business goals. Graduates learned about the challenges and myths associated with TDD, what a good test is, and how TDD relates to architecture, legacy, and business goals.

Fedor Eremenko from Altimet spoke about Spring Cloud. Graduates listened to a full review of Spring Cloud, learned about Service Discovery and Circuit Breaker.

The speakers also arranged a live-coding session for the meetup participants, where they showed with illustrative examples how certain instruments work.

The last speaker was German Sevostyanov (CEO JM), who gave advice on career growth and development to community members.

The lecture part smoothly turned into an unofficial continuation of the event. Alumni had the opportunity to meet with students and communicate on abstract topics.

Just in case, let's clarify that we carried out the meetup with all the necessary precautions.
