Why is Starship performing a coup maneuver?

Starship is performing maneuvers that have never been done before. It is a rocket 9 m wide and 50 m high, which falls horizontally from the sky, then flips over and lands vertically.

Landing attempts raised many questions:

  • Why are they doing this maneuver?

  • Why are they doing this maneuver so close to the ground?

  • Will it ever be safe enough for humans?

  • Why don't they just start the maneuver early and make sure there is enough time to make adjustments if something goes wrong?

  • Are the resulting overloads acceptable?

  • SpaceX Falcon 9?
