PowerPoint courses in 2 years

Hello everyone, my name is Roman. I'm 40 years old. Of these, I have been in IT for about 25 years. My first position was a software engineer. I got it when I was 17. Without education. In a small town in the outback of Russia.

By the time I was thirty, I had reached the β€œpeak” of my IT career. I became the CIO of a large, international company. All of a sudden I had a problem. The problem of dialogue with business.

Do you know that a business doesn't need software that works well? And the fact that he does not need timely completed projects? It may seem strange to you, but the business values your loyalty more than the desire to do them good.

And this is weird. Every day IT people are told the opposite. Their effectiveness is assessed through quality and timing. They require a plan and an accurate estimate of the project. I can’t think of a direction more worn out by planning than IT. Production is possible. But I'm not sure.

CIO - firing position

I heard this joke more than once before becoming a CIO. And he smiled. I realized the depth of sarcasm only when I became it. One of the examples, of which there were a lot:

My task is to deliver the project to the customer on time. The duration of the project is a quarter. Simultaneously with the project, it is necessary to reorganize the work of the department. As it turned out, so far no one has fulfilled the set goal on time.

It was a very interesting time. The team and I were able to do everything to solve the problem. All the best project management practices were applied. With difficulty, but we received a signature on the act. Have rolled a well-deserved holiday.

Literally a week later I was asked to leave. Do you know what is the reasoning?

 - Roman, you have no taste.

Those. I fulfilled the plan, formed a successful team, and no one denies this. But ... thanks, goodbye. Paradox?

And the thing is that the customer did not want the act to be signed. Did not want. There was no reason not to sign the act. He had to sign. Otherwise, I was carrying legal risks. But, he DIDN'T WANT . For their own reasons. And therefore, he hinted to my bosses that he no longer wants to work with a company where there is β€œsuch” a CIO.

To be honest, I am aware that my worldview is changing. Today I am thinking - can I apply everything that I get in practice? I have no answer to this question. But the desire to learn more and more only grows.

Already today I design systems in a completely different way. I like how I feel about it. I feel that we are starting to speak the same language with business. I know exactly how I influence the value of the product. For the first time, I realize how I can improve it.
