A neurologist's perspective on the problem of autism

This article is written primarily for parents of children with various forms of autism. Parents spend much more time with their “special” children than speech pathologists, psychologists and teachers. And therefore, I believe that they should understand what is happening with their children and how to fix it.

The cerebral cortex of an adult is similar to a political map: it is all conditionally divided into zones (fields). In a newborn child, these fields are barely marked, and the cortex itself is very thin, there are few cell layers in it. The cortical fields and the cellular composition of the cortex increase and differentiate throughout a person's life. The ability of the cortex to change is called neuroplasticity .

The development of the cortex proceeds in a certain sequence. Of particular interest for understanding the causes of autism is the very first period,  conditionally divided into   three stages :

Working with autistic children is difficult, it requires a lot of time and effort from parents, but this work is a contribution to the child's future, our chance to change what was previously considered irreparable.
