Organization of remote work of a BIM team through HPE Edgeline, NVIDIA, VMware

In the Russian Federation, widespread implementation of digital construction is underway and the use of digital building models (BIM - building information modeling) at the legislative level. For example, from March 18, 2021. The Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of 03/05/2021 No. 331 "On the establishment of a case in which the developer, technical customer, the person providing or preparing the investment feasibility study, and (or) the person responsible for the operation of the capital construction object, ensure the formation and maintenance of information model of a capital construction object ". The choice of a technical base for the introduction of a new technology should be justified by a feasibility study. Foreign integrators are engaged in similar research. This note is a free translation.research from independent systems architect Thomas Poppelgaard .

BIM engineers are now on the table. In theory, the benefits of replacing physical workstations with remote ones are obvious. First, engineers are no longer tied to a physical workplace. Secondly, more devices can be connected to the central network. Thirdly, from the side of the local network of the company, greater centralization of calculations is provided; great opportunities to scale the telecommunication network for graphic tasks; and it is easier to ensure the protection of information. Fourthly, the issue of organizing file sharing for the working group is being addressed. The organization of remote work is complicated by the fact that it is difficult for system administrators to scale the server platform. The volume of data is growing; they are constantly changing; and synchronization between the server and users takes up a lot of network resources.

New offerings from HPE have enhanced graphics capabilities, and the HPE Proliant m750 even has a dedicated processor dedicated to graphics with NVIDIA P1000 or NVIDIA T4 graphics cards. This solution is designed to meet the requirements of experienced designers, architects and 3D generalists.

To organize remote work with high-performance graphics applications, HPE has 3 hardware solutions in various designs according to form factor:

Solution 4 is for customers with high-performance applications such as Autodesk VRED, Maya, Arnold, 3DSMax, or Dassault Catia. The solution fully supports real-time ray tracing, as the NVIDIA T4 GPU is capable of providing these capabilities. This solution is also preferred if customers want to use VR solutions such as NVIDIA CloudXR, where they can combine it with VMware Horizon.
