Do masks protect against COVID? Scientific FAQ

The most important misconception

Q: How can these masks work at all? The size of the holes between the fibers is much larger than the size of the virus itself, it is like using a mosquito netting!

A: The dimensions of the SARS-nCov-2 virus are indeed on the order of 100 nm in diameter. ( link ). However, much more important is the fact that the virus itself does not fly through the air, but is carried by droplets of moisture during exhalation (the so-called droplets), the size of which is several orders of magnitude higher - about 5-10 microns. In addition, there is no need to write off the fact that when several layers are tightly combined with an offset relative to each other, the final size of the holes becomes much lower than when using only one layer. And then there are electrostatic effects, but that's a completely different story.

Q: What does current scientific knowledge generally say about the effectiveness of masks?

A: Your right. You can always wear N95 / FFP certified respirators, such as those used by doctors working in the "red zones", instead of regular masks. Fortunately, now they are again inexpensive.
