Binary assessment of professional skills

Quite recently, I began to think: "How can I understand that your level of knowledge is worthy?" And here the thought naturally comes to mind that some criteria are needed for the assessment, but let's not go into details, but go straight to the standard gradations: Junior, Middle, Senior. Similar ones are used in the dimensional grid of clothing, they are quite simple and straightforward. Maybe that's why we love them so much? But in practice, the grading estimate can be very badly skewed by the evaluator. After all, behind each label there is a large number of metrics, which the clothing manufacturer kindly calculates for us and labels. But it's worth noting that things don't always go smoothly. What can we say about the assessment of professional skills ...

Let's go ahead and simplify our assessment. As a result, we get a binary assessment: Suitable / Not suitable, it is as simple as possible and significantly reduces the likelihood of error.

Today I would like to tell you about one of such assessments, using a real example.

In 2002-2006, I actively played Counter-Strike 1.6 (CS). At that time, I was one of the best players in the Siberian region. And it so happened that in the college where I studied, they decided to hold a CS championship. I learned about the tournament by chance and of course I wanted to take part in it. As it turned out, this tournament was not the first, but had already been organized earlier, but I did not know about it.

Summing up, it is obvious that the assessment of professional skills, even in a binary format, may be incorrect. Surely my situation is not unique. I do not undertake to judge the motives of such an assessment or try to find any criteria. I am convinced that they will very much depend on the personality of the person who implements it. I'm curious to know how you deal with situations where you get an obviously erroneous assessment. Do you go to the end or do you go aside?
