Google has removed the ClearURLs extension from the Chrome Web Store

Google has removed the popular ClearURL extension for some reason.

ClearURLs is a privacy-enhancing browser extension that automatically removes tracking tags from URLs. According to its developer, it can help protect your privacy when you visit sites.

Many sites have unnecessarily long URLs with additional parameters that do not carry any functionality, but are used simply for tracking. This is more true for links found, for example, in newsletters:

https://example.com?utm_source=newsletter1&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=sale&some_other_tracking_bits=...

For example, when you click on an image search result, Google does not immediately send you to the original URL of its web page, but to an intermediate URL that redirects you.

&ust=1616XXXXXXX&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CXXXXe-p3XXX

The additional parameters in the above url (ved, cd, etc.) are just tracking tags and referrals used for analytics .

ClearURLs is designed to filter such tracking parameters from URLs and improve user privacy on the Internet.
