"Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll is one of the most beloved fairy tales that both children and adults around the world enjoy rereading.
But at the same time, it is also one of the most difficult works to translate into other languages. The author generously uses metaphors, references and puns that are understandable only to the British, exploits popular nursery rhymes and cultural characteristics. The work is full of philological subtleties, nuances and linguistic humor.
The translator is faced with the most difficult task: to convey all this variety of meanings and make it understandable to a small Russian-speaking reader. Even Vladimir Nabokov undertook the translation, and in his version Alice suddenly became Anya. Why this was done and what translation of the tale is considered canonical - today we are talking about this.
