Why are there so few developers for game consoles in Russia?

The market for console games is considered the major league among game developers. However, it is almost impossible for Russian representatives to get into it. I talked with leading developers in Russia and found out the reasons for this injustice. More details about the investor's penchant for mobile, the cost of development, mysterious NON-encrypted devkits and illegal imports can be found in the material.

Major console league not for everyone's teeth

Not every developer dares to try his hand at the console games market. Many people create applications only for mobile devices, as mobile games are faster, cheaper and easier to create. "Set-top boxes are difficult and expensive. You have to wait a long time for approval from a company producing consoles. Mobile games have a lower entry threshold. Plus, it is easier to find a publisher for a mobile game in Russia ," said Murad Khafizov, co-founder of the Digital Media Lab at ITIS KFU.

The game can get to the console in two ways. The first implies that game consoles are initially chosen as a platform, and the game is created specifically for them. The second is a porting  - adaptation of an existing game for a console.

"The media spaces of platforms overlap somewhere, but differ somewhere. The cumulative effect will increase marketing, and more people will learn about the product ," says Yan Shevchenko, founder of GD Forge and Fair Games. Indeed, if a company is a major player, then it can afford to release projects on all platforms at the same time. This approach is considered the most profitable and most profitable, but requires significant starting resources.

Game developers equate reaching the level of game consoles with getting to the "major league" and call this process long and requiring "astronomical costs." However, those who manage to "break through" go international and receive opportunities, partners, clients and the respect of colleagues.

Other developers also admit that Sony and Microsoft do not support Russia and the CIS countries, ignoring appeals and not providing any assistance in the process of obtaining both developer and devkit status.

Microsoft's inability to legally send devkits to Russia and legal difficulties with the FSB and customs - all this causes confusion among developers. We are waiting for the situation to improve and Russia will be able to adequately show itself on the international console games market.
