Methodology, framework, or project management standard

Continuing the article on the classic PRINCE2, upon request from the comments, I tried to compare the key project management techniques. I hope that something useful has turned out and that when choosing a management approach, some of the readers' questions will be removed.

Brief introductions:

  • PRINCE2 (Projects in a Controlled Environment) is a structured project management method developed in 1989 by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) in the UK.

  • PMBoK is a project management framework (body of knowledge) developed in 1996 by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in the USA.

  • ISO 21500: 2012 Guidance on project management is an international standard developed by the ISO / PC 236 Project Management Project Committee.

As you can see, the first major difference is your own positioning in project management. The rest of the main differences with some subjective conclusions are shown in the table.

Based on the selected indicators for comparison, I note that PRINCE2 is a fairly flexible methodology for use in projects of any size and industry. ISO 21500, in turn, is a revised and abbreviated squeeze of PMBoK, which missed many important points for management. For all its heaviness, PMBoK is the very “foundation” of large projects (especially those carried out according to the classical scheme). But the final choice always rests with the Project Manager based on his knowledge, practice and environmental constraints.
