Photovoltaics

Energy of sun. Infinite and almost surplus energy. It would seem, take it - I don't want to. However, this energy itself has a rather low density (otherwise there would be problems with life on this planet), so humanity had to learn how to squeeze something serious out of the soft sun. And it came to a number of solutions that can be divided into two categories: the use of the direct thermal component of solar radiation (the so-called Solar Thermal) or the use of the photoelectric effect - the direct generation of electric current when sunlight and some materials interact. These things are called "photovoltaic" (photovoltaic), and it is about them that will be discussed in this article.

Story

This region begins its history in 1884 (!). It was then that New York-based Mr. Charles Fritts put together the first photo panel. It was made of selenium with a thin layer of gold on top. This "device" turned out to be working, but there was no even close talk about any economic efficiency. But, as they say, "a small step ..."

The first photo-panel even got into the photo.
