How AI is used in cities and for public services

Machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing are already used in various cities around the world. Artificial intelligence is helping to reduce air pollution and optimize traffic lights to reduce air pollution, count trees based on Google Street View, and even divide property and children in the event of divorce.

In this post, let's discuss a few examples of the use of such technologies to deliver public services and improve urban environments.

With the sorting problem, Canadian startup Intuitive AI decided to help with computer vision technology. They equipped the trash bin with a camera, speaker and display. And it works on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 AI platform.

You approach the container, show the camera the trash in your hands, the neuromodule analyzes the image and compares it with its own Wastenet database. The system then indicates exactly where this garbage needs to be thrown.

This increases the efficiency of separate waste collection by 300%.

And they called this algorithm Oscar - after one of the characters in Sesame Street, who lived in a trash can.
