What are "monuments of science and technology"?

History of the concept. What caused the interest in preserving objects of science and technology?

Mass interest in objects of science and technology as museum exhibits, monuments, or part of cultural heritage first became apparent in the second half of the 19th century. Until 1851, only one example of an organization where technical inventions and drawings were collected is widely known - the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, opened in Paris in 1794 . It is known from sources that the items collected at the "Conservatory ..." served educational purposes and were more like samples that were shown to students during the course, rather than monuments. The organization operated a drawing school and free educational courses in a number of disciplines.
