In this Saturday's episode, I'll talk about a fun cognitive impairment that allows you to successfully answer questions you don't know the answer to. Of course, this trick will not help you make friends and influence people, but it can help you get through an interview, extricate yourself from an unpleasant situation in a public discussion, or write a scientific monograph.
Despite the fact that this distortion of perception has been successfully exploited for most of human history, the general public drew attention to it after the trial of O. Jay Simpson, known in Russia for his role in the cult comedy The Naked Gun. On KDPV it is on the side.
During this process, the killer's lawyer, a certain Johnny Cochran, used a technique later called the "Chewbacca Defense" - he fooled the jury's heads, bombarding them with many statements, questions and conclusions, completely abstract and irrelevant to the case at hand.
How did it work?
Very simple. Any of the jurors taken separately believed that he had lost the thread of the conversation, while in fact there was no thread at all - Cochran's speech was full of emotional and pathetic statements, completely unconnected by internal logic.
