Incognito mode from Google and other browsers: beautiful wordplay and a little deception

Yes friends! I argue that the "corporation of good", as it was once called, and their colleagues in the browser shop deliberately perverted or twisted the word "incognito", along the way "dirtied" the entire top for this and related queries. They live off data, they just don't need anonymity. But in order.

You all know about incognito mode in chrome, mozilla and so on. And many of you even know what this mode is, but not all.

So, we take from Wikipedia the definition of the word " incognito ":

In the same place, in Wikipedia, we take data on the incognito mode :

It also says:

And it seems that everything was correctly and honestly described . No one was deceived. But ...

According to research from the University of Chicago and Hanover, users do not always understand the meaning of incognito mode.

Based on the results of these surveys:

  • 56.3% believe that no search queries are saved in incognito mode, even if the user logs into Google;
  • 40,2% , , , ;
  • 37% , ( -, );
  • 27,1% , .

A similar study was conducted in 2017 by DuckDuckGo and the result is the same:

66.6% of respondents overestimate the privacy of incognito mode;

41% believe that sites in incognito mode cannot track user actions;

39% believe that incognito mode does not allow sites to select targeted ads for users;

35% believe that in incognito mode, search engines do not remember user requests.

You can answer with the words of M. Zadornov: "They are stupid!", But it's not about people.

It's about the name. Most of us one way or another can give a more or less clear definition of the word "incognito": anonymously, under a pseudonym and other similar synonyms. And this is where the deception lies. We perceive "incognito mode" as something private, anonymous and secure.

And there shouldn't be security.

Here's another example of a successful juggling of words: the "future" electric truck manufacturer Nikola held an IPO for $ 12 billion in 2020, but there is still no finished product. Did you guess why the company took off so much? Yes, everything is simple - for ordinary people, the names Nikola and Tesla are closely related. And someone just cling to the company of Elon Musk.

But let's go ahead and speculate why this regime was called that way? Well, the one who looked at something from a working computer could remove unnecessary things from the browser history with pens. My assumption is this: back in the mid-2000s, there was a request for privacy and anonymity on the network and Google decided not to remove everyone in a row on this topic from the SERP (you can get into a scandal and not keep the SERP empty), but just mix the results to the point of impossibility with its almost useless product (I assume that each computer is used by 1 person, and in this case this mode is useless). Of course, by coincidence, Google products regularly push everything else out of the top. In the end, try to Google something with the word incognito - I have 8 out of 10 about "incognito mode".

Zy: I was outraged for a long time by this substitution of concepts from browsers, so outraged that a product in which the word incognito will mean anonymity, and not something else , is about to be released into the beta test . The test is tentatively scheduled for April.
