As a developer, I have developed a habit of reading docs and manuals systematically and in large volumes. Now I run the iOS development department at Cardsmobile and I hardly write any code, but the habit remains. There are as many articles about management written as about programming. And after reading publications on the next such topic, I realized something: I shouldn't have read them while I was actively coding. After all, my team always has at least one manager and it would be nice to understand what he is doing. At least a little. After all, if he does his job poorly, is it better to find a new one?
People quit not because of bad jobs, but because of bad leaders. Herzberg's research shows that poor leadership is the second most negative factor affecting motivation. The first is company politics and bureaucracy, which is actually the result of poor leadership.
You can blame anyone and as much as you like for such a dismissal, however, the development of your career depends on yourself in the first place, and in modern realities it is you who choose the company and the leader. The good news is that this means the situation can be influenced. Using a couple of handy graphs and some fun tales, I'll explain how to spot a bad leader right away in an interview.
It is not always possible to articulate unambiguously who a good leader is and what skills he should have. It also happens that at the helm of the company is a person with unique competencies and a visionary beginning, but at the same time a destructive managerial style. After reading this article, it will become clearer to you why Steve Jobs, for example, was a bad leader.
6 management styles
There are many classifications of managerial styles. More than others, I like Daniel Goleman's classification published in HBR in 2000 . There are 6 styles in it:
authoritarian,
authoritative,
democratic,
exemplary,
comradely,
teaching.
