How does the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics work?

How did Boston Dynamics teach Atlas how to run, jump, do flips and dance steps? The secrets of the robot were told by the founder of Boston Dynamics, Mark Reibert and the engineer of the company, Scott Kuindersma. This article is based on their presentation. But as they say, it is better to see 1 time than read 100 times, so watch our video:

Talking about smart robots, the first thing to understand is that machines, like humans, have two types of intelligence: motor and cognitive. Cognitive intelligence allows you to recognize a problem and figure out how to solve it. Motor intelligence allows you to control the body without thinking about how to walk or jump, control your energy, calculating forces for a particular action, and also perceive information in real time to interact with the environment.

Boston Dynamics' approach to its robots is to first build robust, robust motor intelligence in all circumstances. Then proceed to the creation of a cognitive one, for which it will be easier to plan the actions of the robot, relying on the developed motor intelligence. And then engineers have to make the motor and cognitive intelligence work together.

Boston Dynamics admits that the reliability of the Atlas robot cannot yet be compared to that of the Spot robot. Its maintenance takes a long time, but the engineers are not going to stop. So, soon Atlas will learn to work with his hands. Don't just rearrange boxes or balance with your hands, but complete complex tasks to the fullest so that the robot's arms become as agile as their legs. What else do you think the world's most advanced robot should learn?
