Tesla to launch powerful Powerwall battery power plant in Hawaii

In Hawaii, Tesla will launch a giant virtual power plant (WPP) based on Powerwall home batteries in conjunction with giant solar panels. The power plant will be developed by Swell Energy . Swell Energy specializes in introducing new energy technologies to households.

What is a virtual powerhouse? It is a system that aggregates energy from several distributed resources: solar panel systems and battery packs. WPP makes it possible to offer consumers favorable tariffs.

The launch of the wind farm will help to more efficiently and efficiently manage the available resources. Also, the new complex will contribute to the decommissioning of old non-environmentally friendly stations on fossil fuels.

The total capacity of the distributed power system in Hawaii will be 80 MW / 100 MW * h.

The concept of a virtual power plant became popular after the 2015 launch of Powerwall in the US.

Welcome to Hawaii

Swell Energy is Tesla 's longtime Powerwall partner . The company has already completed several projects. Swell Energy has now received approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission for a new large-scale project.

The contract is worth $ 25 million. Hawaiian Electric will deploy a virtual power plant with Swell Energy. As far as can be judged, this is the largest project based on the Tesla Powerwall.

Pros of switching to autonomous energy sources:

  • availability of an independent power source;
  • control of energy consumption within one farm;
  • electrification of remote and hard-to-reach areas
  • use of clean energy.

One of the large-scale projects based on battery systems has already been implemented by Tesla in Australia. So, in September 2020, Tesla launched the third phase of the virtual power plant. In the near future, 4,000 houses will be connected to the system.

There are plans to transfer 50 thousand Australian households to wind farms. The wind farm in that country is expected to supply approximately 20% of South Australia's average daily electricity needs at its output.

Tesla's own inverter

Tesla recently unveiled its own inverter that will complement the home solar system. The purpose of the system is to convert DC solar energy into AC energy. Owners of such inverters will be able to monitor energy consumption using the Tesla app.

The basis of the inverter is Powerwall 2. This system connects to Wi-Fi and Ethernet. The inverter software can be updated. It works in the range of -30 to 45 degrees Celsius. The efficiency of new equipment is 97.5%, for comparison, for Delta - 97%, for SolarEdge - 99%.
