Assembling an AT-compatible PC with an 80286 processor

Preamble

As a child, I did not have a bicycle ...

No, not really. As a child, I played enough with handicraft Spectrum, at school I found KUVT (MSX-2), and at university - DVK (almost the legendary PDP-11). Thanks to this, I wasted no time. And when I had the opportunity to get my own serious computer, I was already a shabby roll. I was aware of developments in the IT world. I knew Intel and 32 bit won. Having hardly overcome the budget constraints (hungry 90s, student part-time jobs plus loans from relatives), I entered the PC world with a trump card - 386SX.

The trump card, of course, was too small: the "fours" then flew like hot cakes, the Pentium loomed on the horizon, and from the other side Apple was hastily exchanging 68000 for PowerPC. Nevertheless, new operating systems, development environments and even games increasingly required the notorious 32 bits, and IA-32 + 4 megabytes became for me a kind of pass to the club, albeit not a VIP. I learned how to rivet databases on Delphi, set up a network on NetWare and FreeBSD, discovered the Internet ... In general, I was glad that I did not listen to the toad and did not take "out of hand", for half the price, a fairly used "two".

However, now, almost 30 years later, I was stung by either nostalgia, or curiosity, or maybe it's called "gestalt"? Or I'm not saying something ... In general, at the end of 2020, I joined the retro-computing community, having assembled my first bicycle, two hundred and eighty-six.

Disclaimer

In the article, I used several photos of disgusting quality of my own authorship. What to do, the Chukchi are not a photographer, and there are often no suitable images on the Internet. So I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.

This part was, in general, preparatory. In the next part, I just want to start installing the OS, but not anyhow any doswindos, but just such an OS that will reveal the potential of the 286 processor most fully. Also in a hybrid format: a little general reasoning, a little trivia, plus a small tutorial. Will the community be interested in it?

Well, traditionally: the author likes to be constructively criticized and politely point out his mistakes.
