See everything. How and why we create the digital twin of the package

In the article on logistics trends, we mentioned the concept of a digital twin. A digital twin is an analogue of a physical object or process that displays everything that happens offline, helps to track problems and predict the behavior of an object or process in real conditions when the input changes. 





In our case, this is a copy of the delivery process of a tracked parcel - the one with a track number. A digital copy helps to manage all events - cargo movements, employee actions, sorting processes. Creating an operational model of a digital twin is a very useful, but rather difficult task, because it is difficult to imagine that absolutely everywhere and all Mail processes will be visible online in real time. 





Why do you need a digital twin

Delivery of the parcel seems to be a very straightforward matter: accepted - delivered - handed over. But when it comes to 436 million parcels per year, it becomes obvious that everything is not so simple. On high numbers, it will not be possible to convey every departure from point A to B so that a specific person is responsible for a specific box. Dozens of people and systems are involved in the delivery process. On the way of departure, various events take place: some of them can be calculated and predicted, some of them cannot yet. Some are really traceable online, while others are not visible in digital systems. Our goal is to make delivery more predictable and manageable, so we are systematically developing the digital twin of the package, expanding the visibility of all its movements in internal systems.
