Why can't I learn English?

For many years, as a teacher, I racked my brains over this question: why, given equal opportunities (there is time and money for classes, there is a desire, ability, diligence, a good experienced teacher), one student achieves a result, and the other does not?

Now on the Internet, only the lazy does not conduct webinars in English on this particular topic: why it is not possible to learn English. And if you have been to such webinars, or have read articles on this topic, then you know what the answer is given: because there is no system, because they taught in the wrong way, not even on the wrong materials. The presenters of the webinar tell how it should be, give both the system and the materials, and if we are talking about really experienced professional teachers-presenters, their content is really good. Delighted, people grab this straw, get inspired, start working on these materials following this system, but ... The results are again disappointing. And the person comes to the only correct, in his opinion, conclusion: I am not able to learn English. Someone is gifted. Me not. And this understanding plunges into even greater depression ...

And now I will tell you what I think about this and answer the question Why does not work.

First I would like to say this. The problem is in the very formulation of the question: LEARN. Why? Because language is not knowledge. Language is a SKILL. And if we treat language as a skill, then all stasis will fall into place.

How to do it?

In all your phrases, thoughts, regarding English (or any other foreign language), replace “English” with any other skill that you already know: driving, skiing, cycling, rollerblading, embroidery…. And let's hear how it will sound:

“I want to LEARN embroidery”

“I have been LEARNING cycling for many years”

“How long does it take to LEARN driving?”

Sounds stupid, right?

If you are mixing paints, priming the canvas, making sketches, trying some techniques and techniques, but not going to paint, then what and why are you doing?

Therefore, my answer to the question “Why doesn't it work?” Is because there is NO SPECIFIC CLEAR MEASURABLE REAL GOAL.
