Open source intelligence

Introduction

The number of Internet users is growing every year. By the beginning of October 2020, 4.9 billion people, or 63.2% of the world's inhabitants, use the Internet. And the size of the data on the Internet reached 2.7 Zettabytes (1 ZB ~ 10 12 GB). And every year, the number of users and devices connected to the network increases by 6% and 10%, respectively. Most of this information is publicly available. Sources referring to this data or to data from newspapers, magazines, radio and television programs, public reports of the government, are called open. Searching for information from such sources, selecting and gathering, and further analyzing, is an intelligence discipline called open source intelligence (OSINT).

Despite its long history, open source intelligence is just beginning to develop, due to the rapid growth in the volume of information. This area is a popular type of materials research. For those who use it, additional information is opened: for employees - an opportunity to learn more about the future employer, for business - market and customer analysis. But on the other hand, each person should understand what information should be publicly disclosed and understand what can become publicly available information.
