The thorny path of blockchain technology standardization in Russia

Introduction

Blockchain technologies are experiencing another renaissance amid the growth of the cryptocurrency market and the development of stablecoin and CBDC initiatives. We can say that these are two separate worlds. In one, blockchain is the basis for building an unregulated cryptoeconomy, in the other, blockchain is a technology for creating new regulated business processes. 





What can unite these two worlds? Answer: a dialogue between experts of these two worlds (cryptoeconomic and corporate) on the standardization of technological and best practices, as well as the adoption of common technological approaches. Such a dialogue could potentially simplify subsequent integration processes and accelerate the adoption of blockchain technologies by the broad masses.





But how can this be achieved? In a commercial environment, when it is necessary to establish interaction between participants in any sector of the economy, associations and consortia are created. In purely technological matters, such platforms are standardization centers, for example ITU-T ( ITU-T ), ISO ( International Organization for Standardization ). In Russia, such an independent platform for uniting experts of blockchain technologies is the Technical Committee for Standardization "Hardware and software of distributed ledger technologies and blockchain" ( http://bccmt.ru ).





As the head of one of the working groups (since December 2019) and an expert of ISO TC 307 DLT ( TC 307 - Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies ), I want to share information on the standardization of blockchain technologies in Russia and the world. And also to draw the attention of blockchain market experts to the work of TC 159 as an interaction platform that can give a lot to its participants.
