Release Digest: December - 2020 GitHub Release

Introducing the latest and most exciting IT releases for December.

The collection includes everything from world-changing technologies to your daily digital hobbies - all those projects supported by the open source community of wonder developers. Put the kettle on, get out the half-eaten pie and dive into our TOP-10.

PHP 8.0

The ever popular universal scripting language - like the universal condiment - can be used for almost any purpose. But, in our opinion, PHP is still more suitable for web development. It's fast, responsive, and everything from simple blogs to some of our selection of releases is developed on it. Now, with the release of 8.0, you can put improvements and new features into practice, such as concatenated types, named arguments, match expressions, and more. Take a look at a side-by-side comparison between 7.0 and 8.0 on the PHP site .

PHP 8.0 code looks much more concise and clear.

Supabase 1.0

We are very fortunate that developer Supabase took part in one of our recent Open Source Friday streams . During the dialogue, we learned everything about this platform for developing high-quality applications and business development. From the key point: it is with the help of Supabase that any user can build a backend architecture in less than two minutes. At the same time, the service provides the user with a database, an authentication system, resources for storing data, and many customizable functions. Well, we sincerely congratulate the team on the launch!

And we advise you to watch the recording of our conversation with Paul Copplestone from Supabase - free your schedule and join soon.

.NET 5.0

.NET Conf recently took place , so now is the time to mention the updated .NET 5.0. This open source software development platform allows you to create a variety of offerings for different platforms in multiple languages, using different editors and libraries. The latest version of .NET has a ton of features, including support for the new C # 9.0 and F # 5.0. What's more, it also includes Visual Basic updates and performance improvements.

And yes, and if you're a little confused asking yourself what happened to .NET 4.0, then it just wasn't there. The development team decided to simply skip it and go straight to .NET 5.0 to avoid confusion with .NET Framework 4.x. Well, probably this is reasonable!

More information on why the team missed version 4.0, as well as updates in version 5.0, can be found on the documentation page .

Simple Icons 4.0

If you have an urgent need for one thousand and one SVG icons, then Simple Icons is for you. They can be used on websites, in graphics, and for many other purposes. What's more, version 4.0 has a brand new icon from GitHub - GitHub Sponsors!

Designing, analyzing and monitoring IoT devices - this is the main function of InfluxDB . The system contains several powerful APIs and tools for creating and managing time series applications. InfluxDB works ... well, very fast!

It has an easy-to-use dashboard and cloud database, which means it can be used on any platform and for any purpose - even to track CS: GO game statistics as well as weather, environment, Jenkins, Google Cloud and even the COVID-19 pandemic.
