We are testing Intel Xeon 6242R. Gilev test and Turbo Boost

Since the end of last year, we have been using Dell servers with Intel Xeon Gold 6254 processors in the cloud infrastructure . They have proven themselves quite well in terms of the balance of performance and price. However, now we have at our disposal a new batch of equipment, on which we decided to test a more “fresh” version of processors with similar characteristics. Meet the Dell PowerEdge R640 powered by Intel 6242R processors. Let's see how these processors show themselves!

Let's start with the characteristics of this processor (6242R):

The main difference from the 6254 is in the larger amount of L3 cache and more cores. On the downside, the 6242R is scalable to a maximum of 2 sockets.

The rest of the processor specifications can be found on the manufacturer's website here :

Let's take a look at the 6242R in action. Today, for clarity, we will simply use the Gilev test to assess the overall (rather abstract) performance of the 1C server. Let's measure the result with the standard settings and with “Permanent” Turbo Boost enabled.

All tests were carried out on a server with the following characteristics:

Dell PowerEdge R640, 2x Intel Xeon Gold 6242R, 12x64GB RAM, 2x240GB SSD.

OS: Windows Server 2019, build 1809.

We carry out the first test with the following parameters in the BIOS:

The result of Gilev's test in SQL mode:

Result: 29.24 points.

Not much to be honest.

Change the BIOS settings as follows:

Let's see if this gave us a result:

Result: 54.95 points.

In total, we have almost a twofold increase in the value of the test. Of course, this by no means means that the processor's performance has doubled. Here we see only the “reaction” of the Gilev test to changes in the processor parameters.

If we look at how the metrics change in the 7zip benchmark, for example, we see a performance improvement of 10-20%.
