I have read quite a few articles that remote control is evil for a developer. That productivity sags because you get distracted by everyday life. That a person cannot concentrate, because his wife is cooking borscht in the background. That there is no live communication with colleagues and there is no one to ask anything at the right time. And there are many, many other arguments against. Some of these articles and comments were written before the pandemic: someone wrote from their experience as a developer, someone from the point of view of a manager, a business owner, or even just an HR. Another part of the articles was written during the time of the covid.
I understand that all people are different. Everyone has a different life. Someone is disturbed by a one-year-old screaming child. Someone is building a building outside the window. Someone has an uncomfortable pantry without a coffee machine. Someone wants to lure people back to the office in order to feel control and power over them again. Someone simply cannot accept the new rules of the game. I want to argue from my bell tower and hopefully find like-minded people here.
I, like most programmers, joined the profession during my student years, and worked in an office. The office was a rented floor of a building built in the shaggy years. Developers, designers and other IT specialists were given standard tables, standard chairs, standard monitors, and so on. Of course, no one bothered to bring your personal mug, mouse, and even a laptop and an armchair - yes, there were those who bought an armchair for the office - exactly one person out of several dozen. Of course, air conditioners were hung so as not to die in the summer heat, a coffee machine was installed in the kitchen, and appliances like a knife and random spoons appeared on the table. In principle, this is such a banal office, later I saw many of these. Not chic, of course, but in general everything is quite cultural. Nobody makes you work in the barnunderground or outdoors in bad weather - the work of a programmer is generally not very dusty most often.
