Second life of solid waste landfills

Public opinion polls conducted in recent years show a significant increase in public concern about environmental problems. Indeed, the rapid growth in consumption led to the formation of huge volumes of waste, and the lack of a culture of sorting and recycling of waste led to the mixing of household and industrial waste at landfills located near large industrial cities. At the same time, over the decades of the existence of landfills, urban development came close to them, and sometimes surrounded them, creating a kind of intra-quarter "attractions" dominating the urban development and poisoning the environment for many kilometers around despite the presence of a sanitary protection zone around the facility.

According to the results of the Levada Center survey conducted at the end of 2019, 48% of respondents called environmental pollution a global threat, significantly ahead of world terrorism, armed conflicts and wars, as well as global warming and man-made disasters and accidents.

Polls conducted by VTsIOM a year ago showed that 31% see a deterioration in the state of the environment in their community, 23% said they were improving. Then, among the most pressing environmental problems, respondents named air pollution (22%), garbage dumps (16%), dirty rivers and lakes (13%), untimely garbage collection (11%), poor quality of tap water and problems with greening parks and forests. (6% each).

Long-term uncontrolled operation of solid waste landfills, formed in poorly populated places, usually in mined-out quarries and ravines back in the 40-50s of the last century, in most cases led to the ingress of hazardous waste, including waste of 1-4 classes, in addition to household waste danger. Obviously, modern trends in the development of society and targeted state programs are focused on the earliest possible solution to the problems of accumulated environmental damage caused by such objects.

At the moment, the formation of the landfill body has been completed, a degassing system, a system for collecting and cleaning filtrate, surface runoff, and a multifunctional protective screen are being set up.

The video about the course of landfill reclamation, filmed by representatives of the environmental public organization " AntiSMOG ", clearly demonstrates the ongoing changes at the facility.
