Macbook Battery Performance Test

The battery in a Macbook is an important part that differentiates a laptop from a personal computer and makes it easier for users to use. In order to know how your favorite device works, you need to have an idea of ​​at least general information about one of the key elements of the device.



In this article we want to share the results of our tests, talk about this battery model, highlight the similarities and differences between different classes of the same modification.



Apple Macbook: Battery Information



With its small size, the entire Macbook line is equipped with lithium polymer batteries, which allow these compact devices to provide users with maximum battery life. The operation algorithm of such batteries is special, as they are equipped with intelligent controllers. 80% of the battery is charged in an accelerated mode, and the rest of the charge occurs in compensation form. This charge allows not only to quickly prepare the laptop for work, but also increases the battery life.







Apple battery life is calculated by the number of charge cycles. This number includes both full and incomplete charges of the device. In other words, it is the numerical value of the charges that the battery can provide during its life. One charge cycle can be performed both in one day and in several days, but in any case, after each cycle that has passed, the cell's capacity will decrease.



Apple laptops use different rechargeable batteries, we tested the A1405 battery in three groups: AA, AAA, AAA +.



Let's look at their differences



Battery 1405: class AA, AAA and AAA +

The model in question is suitable for MacBook Air 13 A1369, 1466 (Mid 2011 - Mid 2012), compatible with the following models and modifications:

The appearance does not have any special differences, however, the technical characteristics and their performance differ from each other.



The type of all batteries of this modification is Li-ion, used from factories Samsung, Panasonic, LG and other well-known world brands. Along with providing high properties, the element has a good degree of safety due to the use of smart chips for the circuit board and the casing made of heat and abrasion resistant environmentally friendly ABS PC material.



All A1405 batteries undergo a set of necessary checks before leaving the factory, and also have a certificate of compliance with safety requirements. (For example, GOST R and ROHS).



Copies of the AA, AAA and AAA + groups are very similar to the original battery externally and in terms of workmanship, so they will not harm Apple technology.



Differences in A1405 performance of different classes



Battery capacity of this model may vary depending on the cell category. So, in A1405 class AA, 7200mAh, 55Wh are declared, in A1405 category AAA, 6700mAh, 54.4 Wh, and in the same modification of class AAA + the volume reaches 8000mAh, 60Wh. The duration of continuous operation of a laptop with such a power supply can reach an average of 4-6 hours. In order to check this indicator and establish the actual possible operating time without recharging, we tested the battery operation.



For the test, a MacBook Air 13 was used, in which the same modification of the battery was installed in turn, only of different classes. After turning on the laptop, a YouTube video was launched at normal playback speed at 720p in order to track the battery charge.



1405 showed the following indications:



within 30 minutes of watching the video, the level dropped from 100% to 86.3%;

after 1 hour 04 minutes to 76.2%;

after 1 hour 30 minutes to 66.8%;

2 hours 06 minutes of use up to 54.5%;

in 2 hours 30 minutes up to 45.8%;

in 3 hours 30 minutes to 23.6%

after 3 hours 32 minutes 6.8% remained;

after 3 hours 34 minutes of use, the charge level dropped to 2%.



Conclusion: in the video viewing mode in good quality and at full screen brightness, a fully charged device lasted 3 hours and 35 minutes of continuous operation.

The results of testing the performance of A1405 AAA turned out to be different:



7 minutes of viewing - 99.9%;

in 36 minutes, the level fell to 91.2%;

after 1 hour 01 minutes, the charge dropped to 83.6%;

in 1 hour 32 minutes up to 74.1%;

in 2 hours 04 minutes up to 64%;

after 2 hours 35 minutes of operation up to 54%;

3 hours 03 minutes of playback - 44.7%;

in 3 hours 33 minutes of use up to 24.6%;

4 hours 31 minutes - 14.7%;

1.1% stayed after 4 hours 43 minutes.



Conclusion: before watching a video in 720p quality, the battery was charged to 100%, the screen brightness was set to maximum, and the battery operated continuously for 4 hours and 45 minutes.

The last test was carried out on 1405 +:



at the 39th minute of the clip, 87.4% remained;

after 1 hour 03 minutes, the level dropped to 81.2%;

for 1 hour 38 minutes of viewing, the indicator reached 72.6%;

in 2 hours 15 minutes of use up to 62.5%;

after 2 hours 36 minutes of operation - 57.3%;

3 hours 14 minutes of video viewing, the level dropped to 47.4%;

in 4 hours 08 minutes to 33.2%;

after 5 hours 10 minutes, 2.7% remained;

indicator 1.1% for 5 hours 14 minutes of use.



Bottom line: checking the amount of power when the video is on in 720p quality with the maximum screen brightness showed that continuous operation without recharging is possible for 5 hours 15 minutes. The highest performance indicators were recorded for the AAA + type.

Additionally, the battery was diagnosed using the Valley Benchmark GPU stress testing tool. The results can be clearly seen on the screenshots.



In the half-hour load mode, there was no drop in capacity in all battery modifications.



All three categories of A1405 showed pretty good results, but the advantages of the AAA + class are obvious and have been demonstrated clearly.
