Proxmox VE has been updated to version 6.3

Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has released a new release of the virtualization platform Proxmox VE 6.3, according to a press release from the company. The update includes Debian Buster 10.6 with Linux kernel version 5.4 (LTS), current versions of applications for virtualization environments such as QEMU 5.1, LXC 4.0, Ceph 15.2, and ZFS file system version 0.85.

Key changes

First of all, the updates are aimed at ease of integration with the recently released Proxmox Backup Server 1.0 backup system, which we have already reviewed in one of the previous articles . Integration boils down to adding Proxmox Backup Server as the target location for Proxmox VE backups.

All traffic between the client and the server can be encrypted on the client side and safely transferred to the backup server. Creation and management of keys is a fairly simple procedure that provides for saving key files both on a secure file server or USB-drive, and in text form (you can print or save in the password manager).

Ceph Octopus and Ceph Nautilus support

Proxmox 6.3 introduces support for Ceph Octopus 15.2.6 and Ceph Nautilus 14.2.15 Object Stores. The user can select the required version at the installation stage. Many Ceph-specific management capabilities have been added to the Proxmox VE interface. In particular, the function of monitoring the progress of the restoration on the status panel.

The new version allows you to display and configure the autoscaling mode for Placement Groups in each pool of a Ceph cluster. This provides additional flexibility in cluster management and lowers maintenance costs. Ceph Octopus now includes multi-site replication, which is important for fault tolerance.

Web interface improvements

Proxmox web interface version 6.3 has significantly expanded the management capabilities of a virtual data center through the following innovations:

  • Support for external metrics servers . Now you can add data mapping to InfluxDB or Graphite as external services from the web interface.
  • Improved VM boot order editor . Now you can select several devices by type (disk or network) by simply dragging and dropping.
  • Supports optional TLS certificate validation for LDAP and Active Directory.
