Learning foreign languages ​​with reading programs

Some time has passed since my first article on habr . Thanks everyone. The article, as far as I can tell, has been warmly received by the community. Today I would like to talk about the possibilities of readers in terms of learning foreign languages. There are many different methods and ways of learning languages, but one of the simplest, most obvious and accessible is to start reading a book in another language: in an adapted version, if so far it does not work out, or in a normal version, if it already works. From my own experience, I can say that it is especially pleasant to read in the original by your favorite author.

So what can readers offer us? Reflections on the topic under the cut.

I must make a reservation right away that the story will be more about KnownReader (aka KR), which we are developing, as well as a close family built on the same engine (CoolReader, aka CR; KOReader). But some links to other applications will be provided if required. I wanted not so much to share my own know-how, but to tell how it works from the inside, what problems I had to face and how they were solved, and at the same time to acquaint the reader with the interface and capabilities of the application. Because the reading room is a whole philosophy, without understanding which one can miss a whole ocean of possibilities hidden from the eyes of the layman.

Select, translate

Let's go back to our rams. Let me remind you that we stopped at the question of how reading rooms can help in learning a foreign language. The simplest thing is to select one or more words and then translate the selected text in the dictionary. Highlighting is a sore subject for me, since I am convinced that the option with "hold, move the sliders", implemented in most applications (not only in readers), is slow and terribly inconvenient. Fortunately, here in KR there is an opportunity:
